Your Postpartum Quiz Results
Even if you are YEARS postpartum, hormone changes can still be impacting how you feel day to day.
According to the answers you gave on the quiz, you’re experiencing some signs of:
Low Estrogen
Super common, particularly if you are within the first 1 year postpartum and/or you had a "geriatric pregnancy" (eyeroll)
Estrogen is affectionately called the “juicy” hormone - and although it’s at an all time high at the end of pregnancy it comes slamming down to menopausal levels after delivery. File this under things no one told you! So with this comes a few symptoms:
Sweating
Remember those hot flashes your mom warned you about with menopause? This is exactly what’s happening here. Low estrogen gets you all hot and sweaty, and not in the good way. Waking in the middle of the night super hot and sweaty for several weeks after delivery is really common, and if your estrogen is having a hard time naturally coming back up those sweats can last a lot longer and not only be at night. I also see this persist longer in those that are closer to perimenopause (giving birth in mid-30s and beyond)
Vaginal Dryness
Remember, estrogen is our juicy hormone and lubricates a buncha different body parts, vagina included. So if you’ve been given the ok to have sex and feel especially dry and have pain during intercourse, this is likely what’s going on. Itchiness and signs of infections down there can also be related to low estrogen.
Low Libido
Call this nature’s way of spacing out babies, this can go on for a little too long and is very related to having sub-ideal amounts of estrogen as well as testosterone.
Low Mood
From baby blues to full blown PPD , or just a generally lower mood or more grumpy than your baseline. This is connected to low estrogen. Obviously this isn’t the only cause of mood issues and depression, but it’s one of the biological reasons we see this in postpartum.
Foggy brain
That fatigue from earlier can also go to your brain! If you have trouble finding words, feel like cognitively your thinking or memory has slowed down, this is another sign that we need to focus on estrogen.
More wrinkles
Estrogen helps us protect our skin elasticity, and the sudden drop can look like dryer skin and more fine lines and wrinkles. If you feel like you've aged 10 years since having kids, it's not in your head!
Achey Joints
Estrogen helps reduce inflammation in the body, and protect joints and bones. Mild postpartum joint aches are sometimes related to low estrogen. There are also more serious causes of this, so please check in with your physician for any concerns.
Which ones sound like you?
You don’t need to have all of these, but if you recognize a few (and I know you do, because you just took my quiz and here you are!), then it’s time to start working on supporting your estrogen in a gentle way so you can start feeling better ASAP.
How and why does estrogen crash in new moms?
I'm so glad you asked!
Postpartum is like a mini-menopause and puberty all mixed into one sweaty package.
Every single mother who gives birth experiences the peak of estrogen in pregnancy and then the crash after delivery. Estrogen is produced by your body and the placenta to support a healthy pregnancy. And after delivery, it takes a dive and then needs to slowly climb back up.
And from there it's variable on how fast estrogen comes back to baseline, if ever. All this will depend on how you are feeding yourself, what’s going on with your other hormones and whether or not you’re breastfeeding.
We can use nourishing meals, functional foods and safe supplements to support estrogen balance, even if you are breastfeeding.
It's super common to have the lingering effects of low estrogen.
